vino and vinyasa!

21 Aug

This Wednesday, 8/24 the W Hotel San Diego is the place to be.  Two of my favorite things – yoga & wine - are colliding at Beach, their roof-top bar.  The bar is covered in sand, so it’s like practicing on a beach above San Diego!  Pretty cool.

The fabulous Jennifer Oh will be leading a free 60 minute class with adjustments provided by yours truly (extra adjustment love if you bring a friend!).  There will be $3 wine following class, so stay and mingle with other yogis.

Bring your mat and something to keep warm in case it gets cool. More info on Facebook!

now teaching Tuesdays at Akasha Yoga!

20 Aug

I’m very excited to announce that I will now be teaching Vinyasa 2-3  Tuesdays 5:15 – 6:25pm at Akasha Yoga. I’m planning on making this class a fun place to push your limits and explore new poses and variations, so come check it out Tuesday!

If you’ve never been, Akasha is conveniently located just off La Jolla Village Drive and the 5, right by UCSD. The studio is upstairs above Dominoes, and has these big beautiful windows that make you feel like you’re practicing in a treehouse!  For a full schedule of classes at Akasha, go to MindBody Online.

go go Ganesh!

11 Aug

Last week I had the pleasure of taking part in a lecture on Indian deities at Dr. Manoj Chalam’s Unique Arts. I was invited as a guest of Prana Yoga‘s summer intensive teacher trainees and happily tagged along. Dr. Chalam is a scientist and expert in spiritual art, symbolism and mythology. He works closely with Deepak Chopra and John Friend, knew MC Yogi before he was MC Yogi, and recently spoke at the Yoga Journal Conference in New York.

I wish I had taken photos of the space (and hope to go back to get a better look at the temple and warehouse), but you’ll just have to imagine it: high ceilings, carpeted floors where we sat like children, eager to gain new insight into the spiritual and mythological aspects of yoga, shelves full of intricate metal statues, and a beautiful little temple tucked into a back room.

Manoj didn’t disappoint. He started with the basics and told us stories of Shiva and Shakti and their sons, Murugan and Ganesh. We spent most of our time on Ganesh (there’s a lot to talk about – Ganesh is pretty awesome), exploring the intricacies of his symbolism.

Like a good student, I took notes!  (more…)

warrior of change

9 Jan

Sambazon, in partnership with Off The Mat, Into The World®, is launching the Warrior of Change Contest as part of its Warrior Up Campaign – a celebration of individuals and organizations that strive to make the world a better place and inspire others to do the same.

My friend Ruthi is a finalist in the Warrior of Change Contest.  She could win $10,000 for her organization, SuperFood Drive, so please VOTE!

Ruthi Solari, Nutritionist and Corporate Wellness Professional, founded SuperFood Drive in January 2009 in San Diego.  Fueled by a passion for healthy eating and seeing an opportunity in food drives, Ruthi began working with food banks around the city to get nutritious food to the less fortunate.  She helped the San Diego Food Bank develop healthier versions of their 10 most needed food lists and soon found herself as an incorporated non-profit with volunteer staff.

Here’s what Ruthi has to say:

My purpose in life is to help as many people as possible to lead vibrant, healthy lives. I am incredibly passionate about healthy eating. I believe that my food is my medicine and with this knowledge, I want to ensure that all people to have access to healthy foods.

Mission of SuperFood Drive:
Giving the Gift of Health by providing nutrient dense non-perishable food items to populations in need.

Vision
SuperFood Drive seeks to transform local food drives, national food banks and global humanitarian aid into providers of nutrient-dense non-perishable SuperFoods. By educating both the givers and receivers of non-perishable SuperFood items, we promote health and wellbeing to individuals and their communities.

Ruthi is an amazing and inspirational young woman. I am constantly in awe of her achievements, abilities, intelligence, beauty and grace and she definitely deserves this award. Please VOTE!  For more, check out SuperFood Drive and Sambazon Warrior of Change.

New Year’s detox?

6 Jan

We can all use a good detox every once in awhile (whether that be physicial, emotional, spiritual, etc) and the start of the new year is a very popular time to do it!  Just a few days ago the new year felt so fresh, but my body, brain and work inbox are already in serious need of some detoxing (I get so many emails that even if I’m constantly responding, I can’t get below 40 unread messages…booo…but that’s another story for another day).

My man and I are going to Puerto Rico in February for a friend’s wedding and while I’m usually not much of a diet-for-the-event kinda gal, I think I may use the trip as an excuse to treat myself to the below detox program that Prana Yoga and Linea Chiropractic are organizing.  I could certainly do one on my own, but I usually can’t last more than a week on my own willpower (admitting it is the first step, right?).  I think the structure of a group setting will really help me.  There’s an info session next week, so more to come!

21-Day NEW YEAR’S PURIFICATION PROGRAM, in cooperation with Linea Chiropractic Center, Patricia Lotufo, D.C.

Pre-detox & info meeting: January 11 at 7:00 – 8:00pm

not so lazy Saturday

18 Aug

I’ve let way too much time slide between posts…again, but I’ve been busy living and it’s been great.  This Saturday was particularly great.  We had plans to spend the weekend with friends and when they pushed it back a week, we were bummed to have to wait for their visit, but also eager to take advantage of a completely unplanned Saturday.

After a refreshing and perfectly balanced yoga class at The Yoga Project, we made brunch, took the pups for a walk and soaked up the perfect weather.  We’re lucky enough to live in an area with lots of green space and trails and try and spend as much time as possible outside, both for dogs’ sake as much as our own.  Here’s Winston, looking happy to be outside! photo

We picked up some boogie boards earlier in the week and decided to check out Black’s Beach for some ocean action.  The heliport was packed with people and gliders; it was impressive to watch them fly so close to each other and to the houses and cliffs. My dad was obsessed with the heliport last time he went and I know he would’ve loved seeing all the action.  I think we need to try it!

The hike down to Black’s Beach was fun and the hike up gave us a bit of a workout! Unexpected opportunities to lean and tone = awesome!  We had a blast on the boogie boards; I caught a couple of good waves and had a blast splashing around.  We played like kids in the water and chilled out on the beach before heading home for a relaxing evening.  Quite the perfect day!
