Be your own ER

21 Sep

Despite wanting to be a doctor for most of my childhood, I find myself part of the screaming crowd when hurt.  A recent fall left me with skinned knees, bloody hands and a nasty knot on my forehead that turned into my first black eye.  The sight of my blood and the shock from the fall reverted me to my 6 year-old self: full of tears and feeling faint.

I was lucky that my boyfriend was there to help clean me up and get me back on my feet (literally), but there will certainly be a time when I’ll be alone or it’s me who will have to be the caretaker.  Sometimes the sheer adrenaline gets us through, but it’s still very useful to know what to do in case of emergency, and especially important to do the right things so as not to make matters worse.

They cover all the basics, from cuts and burns to bites and breaks.  There are some good to-dos and some no-nos that many of us may have heard of or even used.  There’s a lot that we can do before seeking help from a professional. Keeping a level head and properly treating a wound can make a big difference, but remember to call for help if you think you need it.

The change of seasons is a great time to mix up your fitness routine. And for those who haven’t been active as you’d like, think of fall as a “back to school” for fitness. (more…)

Dr.’s office

8 Sep

I can barely see Dr. C’s head between my bare feet and sheet-covered legs as she pokes around down there. Yeah, down there. It’s not a comfortable position to be in, but I can honestly say that I feel calm sitting there with my feet in the stirrups and my legs spread apart.  We make small talk, laugh, discuss the business we’re both there for, and then move on.
